An original 1942 dustwrapper for J R R Tolkien's The Hobbit An original dustwrapper for J R R Tolkien's The Hobbit, third impression of 1942 published by George Allen & Unwin in London. It was part of a print run of just 1,500 copies. "Third impression" is printed to the front flap, with the original price of 7s 6d. The wrapper measures 52 x 19cm when laid out flat, and shows the remarkable design created by J R R Tolkien himself during the Easter vacation of 1937. The wrapper's image is bordered in runic text (which translate as the book's title) and coloured in bold green, blue, black and white. It depicts the Lonely Mountain to the spine, and with the dragon flying across the night sky on the back cover and the eagles soaring in daylight on the front cover. The mountains to front and back have a form of symmetry. George Allen & Unwin's name to spine in stylised text, with a particular flourish the Gs and the A.Please note: this is for the dustwrapper only. Condition: The spine is tanned, and there is chipping to the spine ends, with one small taped repair at the head of the spine to the reverse. A central crease runs down the spine, with a small closed tear of 1.5cm to the front fold to the right of the publisher's name. There is light tanning and a little corner creasing to the flaps, and with some light wear to the folds.
