Tolkien First Edition 1938 Cover is Library Binding with screen prints of Bowing Hobbit and Dwarf Hat on spine, standing Hobbit? on front cover - lettering for cover was taken from the Lettering on the Dust Jacket. There is a small J embossed near the bottom of the spine. Cover might have been rebound as early as 1940 - but there is some evidence of at least one other copy with the same cover. Bowing Hobbit on title page, and all 1st edition pts. Facsimile DustJacketHardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Extremely rare first US edition, as indicated by bowing Hobbit on title as well as chapter VII being mistakenly labeled as chapter VI. Binding is different though- appears to be library binding, gold-tan with dark blue lettering and a brown Hobbit/elf on front board. All color plates present, clean and vibrant. Minor wear to boards, general shelf/reading wear and dirt. Page 118 has some remnant staining from previous tape. Tape was removed and the entire book was professionally treated and stabilized. The book has flaws and library markings, but it is first edition with the original riddle story. A bargain price.
