Allen & Unwin 1963, 63, 63, impressions 13, 10, 10, 1963 set. In 1964 a special buckram faux leather set was release. 1965 & 1966 the familiar first editions return. Every now and then a special set like this comes along. This is one. Except for slight tanning to the jackets spines, they are near fine. The have uniform wear/colouring although the flash is making RotK jacket look darker, it isn't. No tears or tattering, several "dents" to paper, but these don't extend to the book covers. Not that noticeable in the Mylar. Importantly, the dust jackets are the original light grey colour which is now extremely rare. Books are read once or possible unread, true fine, no marks, Spine gilt as-new. Slipcase label is stained and worse for wear generally, but a solid 5th State case. We have been a professional Tolkien dealer for over 20 years. We sell on several sites, not just Ebay and items can end at any time. Buy now! All our photos are the actual item!Condition, Condition, Condition! As Tolkien book collecting grows in popularity, the availability of collectible/investment original condition books and jackets disappears. It is not just the printing/edition that matters to the value, but that serious collectors want only the best condition. Books with damaged jackets or even no jackets at all, are now increasing in price, driving up the price of complete and better condition copies. You could have a poor copy worth only £200 or a fine copy worth £5,000. That's how important condition is to value. You should always buy the best you can afford original jackets, early printing and very good or better. Unlike other genre’s, the market for Tolkien early editions is quite mature and well established. It is not a matter of waiting for a better copy to come along. There aren’t going to be any! There are no more hiding in the attic or charity shops. People sell off their more worn copies when they upgrade and now leave their collections to their children. We’ve been a specialist dealer for 20 years. Some examples that were plentiful just two years ago are now completely gone or only the dregs appear. As time goes on, you’ll pay more money, for less condition. First editions The Lord of the Rings and Hobbits remain the most in demand. If you like it, can afford it, then buy it while its available!
