A very special set of books. These are the complete works of Gustave Flaubert in french (éditions du Seuil, Paris). The two books come from the library of Michael Hilary Reuel Tolkien second son of J.R.R. Tolkien, for whom he wrote Roverandom. Michael also inspired some chapters of the Hobbit, especially chapter VIII "Flies and Spiders" as he was afraid of spiders and his father could show him that whatever their size, they could be defeated. Each volume shows a bookplate signed by Michael with the date of 27th october 1980 (he died on February 27th, 1984), plus his name, place and date again written on the endpaper in two colours (red and black). Te date is written a third time on the upper right corner with Michael's monogram.Books in a foreign language signed by Michael Tolkien are fairly uncommon. This is a nice example of the Tolkien family linked with one of the greatest french writters of the 19th century.Books are in very good quality overall, cloth bound. Pages edges shows some foxing. Internally clean. Dust jackets, are in good overall condition (some fading and small tears).International tracked shipping, package well protected. Please refer to the pictures.
