Condition: Very Good+. See Description for more info.
A wonderful set of Tolkien’s famous trilogy. The set comprises three volumes, all the second edition, first impressions of the work, printed in 1966 by Allen & Unwin. The second edition of the Lord of the Rings was the only ‘revised’ edition published in Tolkien’s life-time, and arguably is the closest to his intended story. Revised meaning re-edited, with some important aspects of the narrative changed. (There is a lot of information online dealing with the textual differences between the first and second, and later, editions, should this be of interest). Due to the popularity of Tolkien’s works, first impressions of the second edition are rare and scarce. Condition: Overall: An entirely complete and well preserved set of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, 2nd edition, first impression. Very Good + The Fellowship of the Rings: (It is important to bear in mind that the first volume is always subject to more wear.) Being the first of the set, this volume shows some signs of wear on the dustjacket. There is chipping of the ink on the folds of the jacket, with the head of the spine somewhat torn and cracked. The tail also shows some minor tearing and cracking. The front cover of the jacket shows one small mark, with the back cover being faintly stained. In all a Good dustjacket. The book itself is clean, entirely complete and includes the map tipped in at the rear. Shows some minor wear to the top and bottom edges, very slight bumping to the corners. Very Good. The Two Towers: The dustjacket to this volume is in Very Good condition, with very minor ink wear to the head and tail of the spine. The back cover has a couple of what appear to be damp stains. No other faults to speak of. It includes the rare printing error below the blurb, where ‘The Return of the King’ was tipped out, see photos. The volume itself is fresh, clean and bright, with no faults to speak of. Entirely complete, with map tipped in at rear. The Return of the King: The dustjacket is Near Fine, showing some small wear on head and tail. No major faults to speak of. The volume is in Near Fine condition, entirely complete. Pages fresh and clean. Again, map tipped in at rear.
