The Lord of the Rings Trilogy [with] The Fellowship of the Rings; The Two Towers; and The Return of the King [Reviewer Donald Barr's copies] Author: J.R.R. Tolkien Title: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy [with] The Fellowship of the Rings; The Two Towers; and The Return of the King [Reviewer Donald Barr's copies] Publication: Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1954-1956 Description: Very Good -. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1954-1956. First American Editions with dates to title pages, "First Published 1954" and "1955" to first two volumes, and no additional printings listed to Return of the King. Three octavo volumes. 423; 352; 416pp. Fold-out maps to rear. Blue cloth boards stamped in gilt; yellow topstains. No dust jackets. Ownership inscription of Donald Barr to front free endpaper of each volume. OSS Officer and science-fiction writer himself, Barr reviewed The Two Towers for the New York Times in May of 1955, praising the work for its "pure excitement, unencumbered narrative, moral warmth...yet a serious and scrupulous fiction, no little visits to one's childhood." W.H. Auden reviewed Fellowship for the same publication and would close it out for The Return of the King as well. Cloth quite worn at extremities with chips, tears, and fraying to spine ends and bumping and brief exposure to corners. Gilt to spine of first two volumes dulled. Hinges cracking a bit in Fellowship, but bindings are sound. Topstains faded and dust-soiled and barely noticeable; pages unmarked aside from Barr's signatures. A Good to Very Good set. First printings of the American Edition uncommon; these being a compelling, if well-worn, association copies. [Hammond A.b.i-iii; Donald Barr, "The Shadowy World of Men and Hobbits." New York Times: May 1, 1955].
