Thank you!
So the DJ illustration is indeed repeated inside the cover. I was going to suggest that this makes it more likely that the publisher re-bound the softcovers, but I'd say this (old auction) photo below goes against that, as the softcovers appear to be noticeably taller.
Might be time to get the rulers out ?
Also the page with the illustration is 'soft paper'.
Well certainly seems like these were not re-binds.
Interesting northman that your copy does not appear to have that green inner cover as you can see in the image supplied by Predictable Matt.
Lance I think (though northman could confirm) that this might be a quirk of The Two Towers, with the other two volumes having the inner cover in green (FOTR is here shown in the middle and ROTK at the end):

Yes, I now also see that in other listings. So, perhaps we are back to 2 issued 1959-61 sets: hardbacks w/jackets and large softcovers. Thanks to both of you for poking around at this.

You're most welcome!
A question for someone in Sweden maybe?
I found a card loosely inserted in the 1961 Swedish ROTK.
It suggests that there might be a separate book published with the Appendices if readers showed sufficient interest.
Did this ever get published? I have never seen one in any case,.

I remember seeing this once before (not in the flesh, just online). Sadly, this never materialised as a consequence of that insert card, but a separate volume containing a Swedish translation of the appendices was eventually published, in 1971, under the name Ringens Värld (The World of the Ring).
