I could have sworn that said £80-odd yesterday. Anyway, yes --£50.69 is a great price. I see the new cover image for A Reader's Companion too.

£55.80 on Amazon now. That was good enough for me to pre-order.

Pocket Edition of Tom Bombadil cover.

Today we received from HarperCollins a preview of the cover of the new pocket edition of The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other Verses from the Red Book, in advance of the image being released to booksellers at the end of this week. The publication date remains 9 October this autumn. The cover art was adapted from the original wraparound jacket and cover painting by Pauline Baynes. As mentioned here, the new edition includes earlier versions of Tolkien’s poems together with our introduction, comments, and annotations.

For reference the second image is the original, which is the back cover of the The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, in print from 1962-1975.

I really like the new version by the way, it is so well done and keeps so much of Pauline Baynes fantastic detail from the original.

Findegil, Do you know if the front cover of the original book will now be on the back of the new edition?

We don't know what HarperCollins plan to put on the lower cover of the pocket edition, but according to our latest information, they intend to reproduce the full wraparound cover art on the endpapers, so it will be in the book one way or the other.

You may recall (Chronology, p. 597) that Tolkien noticed too late that the original Bombadil cover art had Tom on the back and the mariner on the front, sailing east rather than west. He felt that the picture should have been reversed in direction, but the titling frame would have had to be moved. At that time it would have meant new art; now the frame can be cut, pasted, and amended in Photoshop. Ballantine Books accomplished something of this sort for the earliest printings of The Tolkien Reader, putting the (cropped) Bombadil upper cover on the back, with a blurb in the titling frame, and the Bombadil lower cover on the front, with an oval title panel superimposed.

I must admit, I'm not a fan of materials that masquerade as other materials, so leatherette is a bit of a no-no for me.

Well, it looks like the facsimile Hobbit ain't happening this year. Pushed back by another year. Sigh.

Unfortunately, the release date for the item(s) listed below was changed by the supplier, and we need to provide you with a new estimated delivery date based on the new release date:

Tolkien, J. R. R. "The Hobbit Facsimile First Edition"
Estimated arrival date: July 01 2015 - July 06 2015

I got the same email as well.

I am hoping that HarperCollins would think about an independent release of the Audio CD of the so far unreleased audio, by Tolkien, from the The Hobbit, as they appear to be facing issues with producing the Facsimile Hobbit.
