GTC appear to have bought all the Tolkien lots in the Profiles in History Auction, including $104000 for the Elaine Griffiths inscribed LOTR.
"He also said that as part of the exhibition project GTC is forming the GTC Fellowship, a Tolkien collecting society."

A Tolkien Collecting Society sounds interesting. Kind of against the whole collecting ethos I feel; buying on this scale, & with this money tho'. At least the books are in good hands. Incidently is this Mark Faith (of GTC), the eBay traider dogfark (Mark Faith Books)?; of the fake AL CoH discussed in another thread...

I don't think so, based on a teeny bit of inside information and mostly speculation. GTC has selected some people to acquire assets, etc., and I assume that Mark Faith is one of those - just an intermediary to provide some anonymity to the actual collector who is putting this collection together.

Exactly the same sentiment arose in talk with Beren and some friends yesterday ...

hmm... looks like some folk out there think they can become 'instant' collectors just because they have money to spend. There's more to it than that.
