Different ISBN on DJ and copyright page [Morgoth's Ring]

Hello. This is my first post on this forum though i have been looking on here for a few weeks.

I have come across a tolkien book im interested in buying, however the ISBN on the copyright page is different to the ISBN on the dustjacket.

Is that normal for books to have two different ISBNs or are they meant to be the same.

If they are meant to be the same does that mean the seller is trying to pass off the book as a first edition, first impression, when really only the DJ is or vice versa?

Thank you.

Could you provide more detail? What book is it? (provide a link if you can); what are the two ISBN's?

The book is Morgoth's Ring.

ISBN on Copyright Page states 0002241951 whereas ISBN on Barcode of Rear Cover of Dustjacket states 0261103040. First UK Edition, First Impression 1993.

Hope that helps.

Also what price should i expect to find a first edition, first impression copy of Morgoth's Ring in near fine/fine condition?

From what i have read the last three books of HoME are harder to come by and therefore more expensive, the most expensive being the final book in the series - The Peoples of Middle-Earth. Still i dont want to pay more than i have to!

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, in this title, the jacket does carry the incorrect ISBN. The copyright page is as below. The 2nd impression employed a line sequence (e.g. 23456789) --so if you see this: watch out, it's probably a 2nd impression (-don't have an image of this, sorry).

I gave an overview of prices recently in another thread.

Hope this helps.

If Deagol's site was still available you would have been able to verify this yourself

Ah ok, so the actual book itself is genuine first impression but the DJ is not, got that now!

The link was very useful thanks, i had seen it on here before but i didnt know which thread/topic is was in.

You say in your post from other thread, that you dont need to go any higher than £100 for Morgoth's Ring, the one i was looking at was on Abe books and cost £165. I wont be getting it now i know its not even all 1st impression!

Is there anywhere else to get HoME books from other than Ebay?

Thanks.

Thanks for reply Trotter, i came across that site but it said it was hacked or something?

So is the ISBN an error in all the first impressions of Morgoth's Ring or simply the one i was looking at has a different DJ to what it should have? Im getting confused, lol.

My goal is to eventually get all the HoME in first impression, first editions though being a student this will be difficult!

I have a first impression of this book and it has the wrong ISBN on the title page 'ISBN 0002241951' appears on the verso of the title page. This is an error, as on tolkienbooks.net.

Oh so the error is on all the first impression, first editions of this book.

I still feel that what is being asked £165 is too much given that others have been sold for around £100.

Do you know of anywhere other than getting lucky at a car boot sale or on Ebay it could be purchased for around £100. If im honest i thought Morgoth's Ring was meant to be very expensive and so thought i was getting a good price for it at £165!

Thanks for the help guys!
