I've seen the black friday offers, so thanks for the heads up.

My old paperback copies are now in need of replacing. So I'm wondering is it worth picking up some of the deluxe versions, because some other members have pointed out that the latest printings aren't always the greatest? Or should I just pick up some paper copies instead?

I personally don't like the later printings of the earlier Deluxe editions (if that makes sense). The UK and Italian printed ones aren't bad, although the quality of the slipcases declines between the earliest volumes and most recent.

In all honesty, I'd probably just buy nice second-hand (as new) hardbacks on eBay for Hobbit and LOTR, etc. Just go earlier than HarperCollins as the quality of the standard editions generally declined post Unwin Hyman.
