I am trying to collect all the UK Tolkien Diaries and about to write to Harper Collins to find out when they started producing these Diaries.
I think the first one was in the early 90's (1992) by Grafton but if anyone knows any earlier UK diaries then I would be delighted to hear about them.
I am also thinking about a Diary website, but as they are so similiar to the Calendars do people think this would be useful?
Thanks

There are none listed in any of the pre-1992 A&U/Unwin Hyman/HarperCollins catalogues. I have diaries from 1992-1995, 1997 and 1999-Present.

Thanks Deagol, that is very useful.
I assume that your pre-2000 Diaries have the same illustrations as the respective calendars for that year, or are any of them different?

Hi Trotter -
From the movie "Field of Dreams": If you build it, they will come. It doesn't matter whether anyone here thinks that a diary website would be useful or not. (Even though I think it would be of interest to me. But more on that following.) If you have fun with it, learn anything from it, meet any people with common interests, then you have three good reasons to build it. I built my Compleat Gyde to Tolkien Calendars website for those reasons, and I have not ever regretted it. Although many fellow collectors have asked that I add the diaries to my calendar website. I have not been very much interested in them - no insult to your interest intended as I do have several of them. But I have not actively pursued them as I have the calendars. You might consider expanding your "world" a bit and collect the diaries from "all over". I know of US and Italian issues (and, I think, a Polish one??) I say go for it. Good luck and have fun!

The 1992 and 1993 diaries have artwork by JRRT and are vitually identical.
The 1993 lacks any days so can be used for any year.
The 1994 diary is by Alan Lee.
The 1995 diary is by John Howe but with different pictures to the calendar.
The 1997 diary is just a re-packaging of the 1993 dayless diary with a different cover.
The 1999 diary is by Alan Lee. From here on HarperCollins started using the same artwork for both diary and calendar.
If you do decide to do a site if might be worthwhile to add in the address books and birthday books that HC have issued.

I am hoping to have the web site by the end of the year now, as I have been trying to get all the Diaries.
Does anyone have any spare copies or knows of any dealer who may have the following Harper Collins UK Diaries that I can buy.
1994
1995
1996
1998 (I don't think that there any diaries for 1996 and 1998)
I would be interested in a link for the web site and will definatley have a link to Parmastahir's site as I'm sure I'll get lots of visitors looking for calendars.
