I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to give their opinion as to an estimated fair selling price for
The Tolkien Library box set (1978, including H, S, and LotR). I've been trying to get my hands on one but the only listings I've seen for them have been around $700/£530 or more. Is that actually a fair price or is that just another 'Wonders of eBay' type of thing? To me it seems much too high.

I saw a fine set go for 100 pounds last year (in Scotland, IIRC -- I expect someone from here purchased it). A couple of hundred is probably fair, I'd say. You have to remember that most prices are just speculative and sellers will sit on stuff for a very long time. I guess the question is, how much do you want to pay for a slipcase, as the books themselves are basically worthless. So long as you don't mind waiting (potentially a long time), you will get a set.

Thanks again Stu... I guess my answer would be that I would happy to pay £100 but not much more than £175. Good to hear that they do come up once in a while.

I think your price range is just about right. Anything under or near £100 would be pretty decent I reckon. I wouldn't personally pay more than the £175 you suggest.
