I'm a little bit lost in the prices asking by some sellers on ebay or others sites when selling volumes of the LotR. So my questions are simple : how much is a fair price for each volume (saying it is in fine condition, for example) and how much is the difference between a first and a second printing ?

Druss,
Thanks for the question. Prices vary widely depending on such factors as condition, American or British edition, and if it contains a dust jacket or not (and condition).
Return of the King is usually the most affordable of the three because of the larger print runs of the American and British first printings.
Second printings or impressions of the first edition are much more affordable because they are generally less desirable.
Here is an excellent website to get started on some basic info:
http://tolkienbooks.net/php/lotr-print-runs.phpAbebooks.com is a decent gauge of current prices for these books, but most of the prices are on the higher end. Occasionally, a good deal pops up.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for your answer Jlong. From what you say, I understand why some editions of RK and second printings are relatively cheaper than others volumes. So to begin a collection it's maybe a good solution.
The link you provide is really interesting, thank you. I looked for these kind of informations on Tolkien Books but I didn't find these page !
