How much are the first or second printings of the LotR volumes ?

Thanks for the question. Prices vary widely depending on such factors as condition, American or British edition, and if it contains a dust jacket or not (and condition).

Return of the King is usually the most affordable of the three because of the larger print runs of the American and British first printings.

Second printings or impressions of the first edition are much more affordable because they are generally less desirable.

Abebooks.com is a decent gauge of current prices for these books, but most of the prices are on the higher end. Occasionally, a good deal pops up.

Thanks for your answer Jlong. From what you say, I understand why some editions of RK and second printings are relatively cheaper than others volumes. So to begin a collection it's maybe a good solution.
