Looks like the '51 Hobbit that has been on eBay/Abe for a while might have finally gone. Anyone here buy it? I was offered it at £1,300 a little while back, but that was still a smidgen rich for my blood. Certainly very scarce in jackets, though.

I don't recall seeing that Hobbit - very pricy, ain't it? I bought a very nice copy in a d/w some years ago; it cost me somewhere between £100 to £150, IIRC.

Yeah, prices have gone up a lot since then, I suspect, but I personally don't see £1000 + value in a 1951. Other people's mileage may vary, of course. I was just curious if anyone here had bought it, as the seller had had it for sale for a couple of years.

I think you probably got a good deal, but equally I haven't seen enough (any) jacketed copies sell, so hard to say. 1951 does appear - along with 1942 - to be the trickier impression to find jacketed.

I paid around £300 or a little over in 2011 for a Very Good Jacketed Copy. At the time I thought I had got a pretty good deal compared to others I had seen sell over the preceding years.
£150 and 5 Years ago was most likely an exception to the norm and an excellent deal. Always nice to get lucky.
