The "Mapping Fiction" Exhibition at the Huntington Library, San Marino, CA, is a single room filled with books from the Huntington collection, some quite rare, dating from the 1600s to the present, opened to show maps. The much-touted Tolkien connection consists of a pristine copy of The Fellowship of the Ring, Allen & Unwin, 1962, with fold-out map. Tolkien is also credited as a creator of fantasy worlds. Other items include a sketch-map by Ursula LeGuin, large etchings of picture-maps illustrating James Joyce's Ulysses, and more. An adjacent room displays treasures from the Huntington, among them a Gutenberg Bible.
The Tolkien item is not worth a trip to the Huntington, but the Huntington Library & Gardens itself is worth a visit, for there are other galleries, art, a bookstore, and it's spring and the gardens are in gorgeous bloom.
