Greetings to all of our members here.
I am in the early stages of writing up an article on Tolkien collecting, specifically how collectors have acquired their items over time. I am interested in hearing from you and where you have gotten your Tolkien items from, the break down of specific percentages from certain areas. eBay, ABE, dealer websites, dealer shops, relationships within the community, etc...
I know that for most of us it is a combination of all, but I'm interested in what the rough % for each category would be.
I would like to conduct an informal poll here in this thread to give you all a chance to respond and contribute to my research. Please respond here after thinking on how the bulk of your items have been acquired over the years of your collecting.
I will give you six categories to consider:
1. eBay
2. ABE/Biblio
3. Dealer Websites
4. Dealer Shops
5. Relationships within the community
6. other (please specify when responding)
This is very much a rough estimate so your percentages don't have to be exact, I'm not asking you to do any hard math here (unless you want to
) I know that some of us keep more detailed records than others, so all I'm asking is to do a quick reflection about your collection and think about where more items came from and where less items came from and try your best to quantify it. Any info you can give would be very much appreciated!

I will give you six categories to consider:
1. eBay --> 55%
2. ABE/Biblio --> 15%
3. Dealer Websites --> 15%
4. Dealer Shops --> 0%
5. Relationships within the community --> 7,5%
6. other (please specify when responding) --> 7,5% (dealers in Oxonmoot and other similar events)

Above my percentages. I don't know if it matters for your research but the rarer the item I got usually the more I moved from the mainstream (ebay) the the less mainstream (relationship with community, etc etc)

1. eBay 40%
2. ABE/Biblio 20%
3. Dealer Websites 12%
4. Dealer Shops 2%
5. Relationships within the community 7%
6. other (please specify when responding) 19% (antique/used bookstores, auction sites, publishers)
Mr.Underhill a couple of points:
1) I think these categories would be very interesting to correlate with different foci for collecting so I will also give some information about my focus. Like most i collect various GAU, UH and HC editions (and some HMCO) BUT i would say as a collector I have a much stronger focus than most (not all :)) on the non-legendarium stuff (academic writings, poetry etc.), a stronger focus on tolkien related art and a slightly stronger focus on rarer editions from various languages. This drives my percentages away from ebay and towards the other sources.
2) % of purchases and % of money/resources spent would look very different for me. Like 2% for dealer shops might reflect absolute number of purchases, but if the task was to reflect on % of money spent it would look different.

With some ammends above (forgot about auctions - catawiki, etc)

My collecting habits around Tolkien are now very limited but if some numbers on general collecting (of books, manuscripts, etc) are helpful I'll add some numbers below. Ignore if you want specific Tolkien habits (and delete the comment by all means).
1. eBay = 0%
2. ABE/Biblio =10%
3. Dealer Websites = 20%
4. Dealer Shops = 10%
5. Relationships within the community 30%
6. other (please specify when responding) = 30% (this is auction sites, and book fairs, I would split it roughly equally between the two.)

More or less, albeit with fluctuations over time (these estimates include both the Italian editions, which make up the majority of my collection, and the foreign editions, mainly the UK ones):
1. eBay: 23%
2. ABE/Biblio: 11%
3. Dealer Websites: 13%
4. Dealer Shops: 2.5%
5. Relationships within the community: 6% (TCG, "Tolkien Collectors" FB group, "Collezionisti Tolkieniani Italiani" Italian FB group)
6. Other: Amazon 16.5%, other websites (such as A Great Read, Alibris UK, Awesome Books, BD, Antiqbooks) 5.5%, Italian sales websites and book-buying FB groups 22.5%.
[I'm not sure if I understood correctly what you mean by "Dealer Websites" and "Dealer Shops": I included a physical bookstore in the latter, while an online bookstore such as Kennys in the former]

Since this has undergone significant changes over time, I will focus on the last two years which have been relatively stable. The sources of my book inventory during this period are as follows:
1. eBay - 2%
2. ABE/Biblio - 2%
3. Dealer websites - 2%
4. Dealer shops - 2% If Bodleian Libraries Shop is counted among these
5. Relationships within the community - 66%. Most books were acquired through direct contact with people who reached out to me.
6. Other sources (please specify when responding) - 26%. This includes 2% from foreign websites such as Tradera, Lastdodo and 2dehands, while the remaining 24% were obtained through auction houses.
