Microsoft have been assisting libraries with scanning of books that are now out of copyright at books.live.com.
I did a search for Tolkien and found that a copy of "
A Middle English Vocabulary" has been scanned and is free to download as a PDF file, you can also search the book as it has been run through OCR software.
I don't own this book, so it is very nice to be able use it as a reference book.
You can download it
here.

Thanks for the link! Very handy for the search function, and fun to browse (so I don't crack the flaking spine on my paperback if nothing else).

The link doesn't work anymore. Is there someone who has downloaded the book and wants to email it to me? Just let me know in a pm and I'll send you my email address.
Thanks

Yeah, I saw Drout's book there as well. I also thought that strange as it must still be under copyright. I think they may have gotten Tolkien's essay Monsters & the Critics mixed up with Drout's book. Well, at least that seems to make sense to me.
