The Lord of the Rings, 3 vol., first editions , The Return of the King second state with sagging text on p.49, folding maps, vol.I & II with previous owner’s inscriptions on front free endpapers, each vol. with bookplate, original cloth, dust-jacket, some light surface marking, vol.I with 2cm. closed tear at upper fore-corner of upper panel, all 3 with neat repair to inside foot of spines, no loss, overall an attractive set, scarce in such condition, 8vo, 1954-55. The bookplates and inscriptions relate to one Stephen Halliday, son of the artist Edward Halliday, including an inscription from his sister, the topographical artist Charlotte Halliday, who also designed the bookplate. est. £3000 – £5000 Sold for £3400 |
