246. Tolkien (J.R.R., author and philologist, 1892-1973) Typed Letter signed to a female ?member of his family, 1p. only, 8vo, n.p., n.d. , answering an enquiry about The Hobbit, “As for ‘The Hobbit’. There are a fair number of corrections needed. I keep sending them to Allen and Unwin but nothing seems to get put right in a hurry. The[y] lost the corrected ‘moon-lather runes’ for Thror’s map: so the map and text do not correspond”, commenting on her choice of an Oxford College, “The whole organisation being terribly democratic (since it is medieval in origin) is also terribly cumbrous, complicated, and slow-moving. Have you any burning reason for picking Somerville? Apart from any private or family reasons for choice, I should myself have selected Lady Margaret Hall, at any rate for anyone reading English”, and news about Aunt Jane’s move to Lincolnshire, “In all my life I have only once before penetrated Lincolnshire. The experience was astonishing. I spent a little while in the Minster. My most pungent memory is of a card over the tomb of little Saint Hugh. It stated that his story was told by Chaucer in the Prior’s Tale! Unless Lincoln is in Asia that can hardly be true, nor could the card have been written by anyone who has read the tale”, very small tear in right hand margin not affecting text.

First editions of the most beloved work of fantasy in modern literature. Originally begun as a sequel to Tolkien’s earlier success, The Hobbit, the present title soon grew far beyond that basis and took its author 12 years to write. Tolkien drew on numerous Norse and Germanic mythologies as well as Shakespeare and the Arthurian legends to construct his pre-History of the Age of Middle Earth. Basis for the Oscar-winning films of Peter Jackson, bringing a new generation of readers to the lands of Middle Earth, Tolkien’s work is also responsible for inspiring the role-playing games of the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Sale Date: 12 December 2007

371. TOLKIEN, John Ronald Ruel (1892-1973). A 2pp. holograph letter, written in the third person and sent to his assistant Joy Hill, presumably for her to type and send on, being a response to a letter received from a devoted fan, with a 1p. note of commentary for Ms Hill. Headington, Oxford, [no date but probably late 1960s]. Together, 3pp. on 2ll. with a printed letterhead, small 8vo (sheet size: 7 x 5-3/8 inches; 178 x136 mm.)

[With:] the original letter sent from the fan, Michael Blashka, to Tolkein . East Northport, Long Island, New York, [no date but probably late 1960s]. 4pp. on 4ll, 4to (sheet size roughly: 11 x 8 1/2 inches; 277 x 217 mm.) Blashka apparently writes as interpreter for King Ephedolos, and includes a map of the new kingdom of Eruidor, the King's message in a runic alphabet, with a supplied translation into English.

An excellent Tolkien hand-written 2-page reply to “King Ephedolos”, thanking him for “expressing approval of the historical books so far issued” , with the fan's original letter. Altogether, a splendid example of Tolkien's appreciation of a fan trying to entice him into a response (his reluctance to correspond directly with people he did not know is well established). The author of Lord of the Rings regrets not having a publication date available for The Silmarillion nor has he any "clear knowledge of the fate of Frodo or others" who crossed the sea. In the accompanying note to Joy Hill he describes the letter to which he is replying as "A 'cracked' letter. No need, of course, to reply, though (I am afraid) this kind of thing amuses me, since I may be considered rather cracked myself for similar ways). The writer is simple-minded but intelligent; and has at any rate tackled the difficult Angerthas with tolerable success. 'Playing the game' with readers of this sort (if not too time-wasting) is perhaps worthwhile, if only as a means of keeping interest in the L.R. alive among the less fantastical (or drugged) young folk ...".

As a guide I had only my own feelings for what is appealing or moving; and it has been a great pleasure (and a surprise) to find that so many other people have similar feelings. But no one has written me a letter more warm, and few have come near it. I am specially grateful for your pleasure in the names: I took a great deal of trouble with them”, complimenting her on her surname, “Your own name is a delightful one, and brings to me suggestion of kinship. It’s such a good name that I must, in any future more complete map of the Shire (often asked for), find a place for it. It is one of the comparatively rare place-names that means what it says: a stream, of sweet water and/or flowing through flowery-meads”, folds (2) est. £1000 – £1500 Sold for £2300
494.Tolkien (J.R.R., author and philologist, 1892-1973) Autograph Letter signed to Elsie Honeybourne, 2pp., 8vo, Headington, Oxford, 21st December 1967, discussing her surname, “I think it still probable that your father’s name nonetheless comes from near Evesham. It must be derived from a place-name; and though -Bourne (stream) is widespread in England, and occurs in Kentish names, Honeybourne is found only in Cow H. and Church H. near Evesham. There was a considerable movement and interchange between Kent and Worcestershire, largely because of the industries of fruit-growing. I shall certainly put Honeybourne on the Shire Map as soon as an opportunity of revision (much needed) occurs”, and commenting on the end of The Lord of the Rings, “I was deeply interested in your choice of passages, and quite agree about Pippin’s ride. An easing of tension was needed at the end of the ‘Book’ (but of course provided instinctively and not by planning). To ride with Gandalf must have been like being borne by a Guardian Angel, with stern gentleness a most comforting combination to children (as we all are)”, and sending a newly published story”, folds ; and a small quantity of ephemera relating to Tolkien including 2 T.Ls.s. from Joy Hill, 1968, informing Miss Honeybourne that Professor Tolkien had moved from Oxford and that he was recovering from a “minor accident”, folds (sm. qty) est. £800 – £1200 Sold for £2200

Songs for the Philologists, first and only edition, original printed wrappers, very slightly discoloured at edges, small 4to, Privately Printed in the Department of English at University College, London, 1936. A remarkably scarce early Tolkien item. This work contains 29 songs by Tolkien and his colleagues during his last few years at Leeds University, written in Middle English, Old Icelandic, Modern Icelandic, Gothic, Latin and other languages, printed in both Roman & Anglo-Saxon types. Few copies were printed, and most were destroyed in a fire at the college where they were stored, along with the press, leaving possibly 13 copies only in existence. With the book comes a typed letter from Dr.Cyril Jackson, who studied at Leeds University just after Tolkien left. The letter describes "...boozy evenings in the Senior Staff Common Room, where...we sang those songs to nursery rhyme tunes". He also refers to visits by Tolkien "when we naturally had a 'party'. After an unreasonable amount of ale [Tolkien's] declamation of bits of Beowulf and the Battle of Maldon was magnificent." est. £3000 – £5000 Sold for £3000
