Little Gwaihir #66, 1995

  • May 1995
  • 24 pages
  • A4
  • English

A poem on Beowulf's death starts out another artistic Little Gwaihir. Dwarven encampments are discussed by Sawa as well as a blow by blow description of the battle at Sarn Athrad. Marjo's story goes on and gets more interesting with every page. The major piece in the issue is the first part of a reprinted article "Time Setting in J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings'". The essay has the bad habit of quoting passages in English, but not using the published names from the English (so we end up with addenda (for Appendices), The High Tribe of Elves, and Land of the Immortals). The essay's primary focus is that Tolkien uses a vast historical and chronological background to create an "epic" time (instead of "fairy tale" or "chronicle" times) in The Lord of the Rings. One nice point that the author makes is that Tolkien tends to describe time in fine detail when there is action while he tends to make time very vague when characters are safe or at peace.
