Tolkien notes his pleasure at receiveing letters from readers. He mentions his mythology and remarks that he has nearly finished a second book on hobbits.
Tolkien says that he must put aside writing on the mythology to work on examinations, though he would rather be writing which is much more interesting.
The recipient, John Kettle, was a Junior House student at Felsted School. He and other students were evacuated to Canon Frome Court in Ledbury, Herefordshire, during World War Two. Additionally, Tolkien reused the envelope and from that we can see that he received the original letter from John on the 5th March 1941.
