Tolkien writes to Edith about his hikes in Cornwall with Father Vincent Reade of the Birmingham Oratory. The two were visiting the Lizard Peninsula from ~5 August through ~19 August.
He also mentions that he hopes war will soon be at an end (see entry for this date).
Chronology notes that Tolkien wrote to Edith on 5, 8, 11, 14, and 16 August, and that a significant portion of the quotes reproduced in Carpenter's Biography came from the 8 August letter.
