TCG Letter #13 / Carpenter Letter #13

From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
C.A. Furth
Date
13 May 1937
Type
Autograph Letter Signed
Transcript
Complete
This two-page handwritten letter contains some of Tolkien's thoughts on the potential publication of The Hobbit in the USA. Tolkien can make illustrations they have requested, or they might use some other illustrator, but there should not be a mix from multiple artists. He would like to "veto anything from or influenced by the Disney studios" for which he has a "heartfelt loathing."

In unpublished material at the end of the letter he asks if the American publisher is going to require originals of his artwork or photographs of them, and wonders if the English edition is going to be published soon.
