Tolkien notes to Stanley Unwin that he has received the agreement for Farmer Giles of Ham, he would also send revised manuscripts for it in Julysee Carpenter #108: Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Allen & Unwin Ltd. • 5 July 1947 (#254)[1] and he notes that his royalty is only 7½% but hopes it will sell well. He notes that he has struggled for time on the sequel to The Hobbit.The Lord of the Rings[2]
Hammond and Scull describe the letterChronology, p. 335[3] and note other details not found in the published text. Tolkien agrees to return the text for 30 June and asks Unwin to return the typescript of Farmer Giles as well as the rejected material.
His recent move has messed up his papers and everything is a mess, he notes that his new house is tiny.The Tolkien's moved into 3 Manor Road, Oxford, which Edith, and Priscilla, and himself found very small.[4]
He is pleased to learn that Rayner Unwin has returned to Trinity College, Oxford, and would like to see him again but does not want to disturb him his studies.
