Tolkien writes a letter to the noted scholar, Allen Mawer,Mawer was born in London and was a noted philologist and researcher into Viking activity in the British Isles. He founded the 'English Place-Name Society.[1] on the subject of the word Lydney. This letter is almost certainly in connection to Tolkien's letter to R.E.M. Wheeler Letter from R.E.M. Wheeler to J.R.R. Tolkien • 2 December 1931 (#1743)[2] on the excavation at Lydney Park, Gloucester.
