Priscilla Tolkien

Christmas 1938

Father Christmas Letter
Transcript
Complete
Father Christmas writes to Priscilla, wishing her and everyone in the house a Merry Christmas. FC says that neither he nor Ilbereth have had time to draw any pictures but that they written her some verse.

The letter is followed by a long verses, by Father Christmas, Ilbereth, Polar Bear P. & V.

Priscilla remarksin Over 21, December 1976[1] that "for me, Christmas Eve was more exciting than Christmas Day itself.... In the evening we had to go upstairs and choose one of father's long, woolly stockings... We would put them at the end of the bed.... In the morning, there was a vast, full stocking... and the letter and a picture in a big envelope... There were accidents when Father Christmas forgot something and then we would get a charming little note on Boxing Day, with the present, apologizing for Polar Bear leaving it out."
