Tolkien writes to C. A. Furth asking that copies of The Hobbit be sent to R. W. Chambers and George S. Gordon. He says that GA&U can use the colour illustrations prepared for HMCo. if they wish. He suggests keeping them in "cold storage" when they are returned by the Americans.Tolkien is referring to GA&U's safe at their offices.[1]
Tolkien sent this letter from 'Aurora', a guesthouse in Sidmouth ran by Tolkien family friends the Liveseys.Rateliff, The History of the Hobbit, pp. 886-7 - onthetrail note: Tolkien noted on his list that the Liveseys had their book already, which leads me to believe thar it was hand delivered by Tolkien when he and the family visited for this vacation. See Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Mr. and Mrs. Livesey • circa 7 August 1937 (#2031)[2]
This letter is held among the Tolkien–George Allen & Unwin archive, at HarperCollins.
