Childe is sent a copy of The Hobbit which had been requested by Tolkien. Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to C.A. Furth (of George Allen and Unwin) • 5-7 September 1937 (#81)[1] Childe writes to thank Tolkien and offer his congratulations on the publication. Tolkien notes in his letter to Furth that Childe had read the manuscript and was well connected to literary circles, especially in the North of England.
It is assumed that with any manuscript/proofs or copies of books sent that a cover letter or note would also be enclosed. We unfortunately do not currently have an example of those cover notes.
*Tolkien makes the request between 5 and 7 September,See FN1[2] to which Furth replies Letter from C.A. Furth (GA&U) to J.R.R. Tolkien • 8 September 1937 (#1975)[3] to say that he is sending a copy to Childe. It is assumed therefore that he sent this from this day, but no later than 27 September when Childe write to Tolkien with his thanks. Letter from W.R. Childe to J.R.R. Tolkien • 27 September 1937 (#2012)[4]
