Tolkien is working on revisions to The Hobbit for the American publishers due to the Ace controversy, but also needs to make revisions for the Longmans edition, an Unwin Books edition, and potentially for an Allen & Unwin edition, and needs some guidance as to whether they should diverge or all be the same (more changes are better for copyright purposes, but there is limited space to make any adjustments in the Unwin Books edition).
Tolkien would like to authorize all changes that Longmans might make in their proposed edition. He regrets that the runes have been removed from some editions of The Hobbit cover and would be pleased to provide similar materials if any of the book designers are interested. He also thinks a note about the spelling of 'dwarves' is called for in a school edition (eg Longmans) and provides some as a suggestion.
