Tolkien talks about his memories of "Bonfire Night", the 5th November.
Part of this letter was printed in the book Black & White Ogre Country - The Lost Tales of Hilary Tolkien.
*A note on the date of composition. Hammond and Scull give a broad date for this letter as "?Autumn 1971" which is very likely. Autumn in the UK is from 1 September to 30 November but as Tolkien is talking about Bonfire Night, (5 November) we believe that Tolkien wrote to Hilary around that time. Therefore we have dated this letter to c. 1-10 November 1971.
