Tolkien was unable to attend a Tolkien conference at the Midlands Art Centre on the 30th November 1969. Joy Hill from George Allen & Unwin and Tom Shippey did attend. Joy was very impressed with Tom's talk and showed his paper to Tolkien.
He declares himself ever 'a Birmingham man'.
