Joy Hill from George Allen & Unwin had attended a Tolkien conference that Tom Shippey spoke at, and took a copy of his presentation to show to Tolkien.

Tolkien replies to the well known Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey remarking on his paper 'The Author as Philologist'.

The first publication of excerpts from the letter are to be found in The Road to Middle-earth, 1992 (2nd ed.), p. xv and another excerpt was published in Lembas Extra 1995.
