W.H. Auden had been sent a proof copy of the Return of the King during the period it was titled The War of the Ring. He offers feedback, some questioning such as "Why does no one seem to care for domestic animals and pets?". He describes his queries as trivial and closes out saying "The War of the Ring is one of the very few books which I shall keep re-reading all my life."
