Mabel Tolkien, J.R.R. Tolkien's mother, writes to her husband's parents saying that John Ronald does not go outside in the daytime due to the heat. She tells them about the weather and environment in what would later become South Africa.^{At this time known as Orange Free State. South Africa was established in 1910.[1]}
