TCG Letter #97 / Carpenter Letter #63

Tolkien had received an airletter from Christopher that morning and he read it while enjoying breakfast in bed. He describes the events of St. George's Day and trying to sleep through air raids. Tolkien continues the letter a couple of days later and tells Christopher that he has been taking care of some matters for Joseph Wright's widow and had a lecture. He had met with C.S. and Warren Lewis at the White Horse.

The letter goes on to mention various activities, including lawnmowing, a lecture he gave whoch he said went badly.

Tolkien closes his letter noting his amusement at Christopher's mention of his journey to Johannesburg. He sentimentally wonders if the "old stone bank-house" still exists where he was born, in Bloemfontein, or if his fathers grave is still present.
