Tolkien had written to Gordon^{Date unknown[1]} which Gordon forwards to Sisam. Tolkien had raised points on the Clarendon Chaucer, especially the 'Prologue to the Canterbury Tales'.^{Sisam will reply that while he agrees with Tolkien, to include all of this material will be too costly for a student edition of the text.[2]}
