Hi, im after advice. I have a copy of The Hobbit 1961 13th impression which i want to sell. Does anyone know the value of it? It has no dust jacket, and the cover is a bit faded on the bind, but overall the conditions good and the pages are good with no marks. Iv looked at some copys to figure out the value, but i can only find copys with dust jackets. Im going to list it on ebay so i want to know what price to start it at too.
Thanks in advance

I think you can feel safe about having a very low start price for bidders. Pre-1970s (not to say pre-1980s!) copies of George Allen & Unwin The Hobbit hardbacks appear to be very much in demand right now, and your copy will likely reach a good selling price, even if it's missing the dustjacket.
I bought a similar copy of what you have, and payed around £20 GPB ca half a year ago (I really must start noting price/date of all my purchases, like the veterans around here!). I would suspect you could get a somewhat higher price right now.
Let us know if you put it on eBay, since it would be interesting to see the result!

Prices are starting to really climb on
eBay & even jacketless copies are going for silly prices.
Morgan is right: start it low (99p) & sit back & watch. You might get lucky. Don't worry too much about what it
should be worth; make some cash on the back of these dreadful movies!

...it MIGHT sell for between $40-$100 dollars.

Do you think you could be any
less specific?
(--that's a pretty broad range!)

That is because eBay is usually inconsistent. The book could sell for even more than that or possibly even less.
What would you estimate that it would sell for? :)

Selling amounts have certainly gone up massively in last few months for any hobbits with/without jackets. The last 2 1961 unjacketed copies on ebay went for £47 & £162 in UK and USA respectively so there is inconsistentcy Jlong refers too.
There is 1 on ebay at moment (already at £26 and days left)
My guess would be £70 if in reasonable condition. This being said i wouldnt pay this sort of amount and would even pause if it had a jacket.
Good luck - now until Christmas is time to sell I say.

I think in December is really going to be the ideal time to sell.

I would have to agree, after the last films prices did not start to go down again until the end of the publicity for the films and that includes DVD's, etc.
As the films are being padded out to three, that is three years of higher prices for early Hobbits and probably early Lord of the Rings as well. A sellers market for a while.
