Original green pictorial cloth, endpapers illustrated by the author in red and black, pictorial dust jacket. Mild foxing to endpapers and a few spots within, light soiling, spine darkened, chip to head of jacket spine extending to top edge of front panel, price-clipped.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. AN UNSOPHISTICATED COPY. With "Dodgeson" corrected in ink on rear flap of jacket. The first edition was published on September 21, 1937, with an initial print run of 1,500 copies. By December 15 it had entirely sold out. Following the tremendous success of the Hobbit, Tolkien was prompted by his publisher's for more novels set in middle-earth, which led to the writing of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Hammond A3.a. "
