Okay, here's a fabulously priced "true" 1st of The Silmarillion:

eBay Item #231609865390

...with a touch of exaggeration for good measure:

1977 Allen & Unwin. This is the true first editions with no price on the flap for international distribution. The UK priced example was just for the UK. Book near fine with only minor blemmishes. Jacket near fine, no tears or marks, spine title is pink to red meaning less sunning than most copies. Generally they are available only with the spine title faded to white. As good and example as they get.
Faded to white?!

A challenge to all members & posters & the public at large. Find a 1977 copy of The Silmarillion with the "Silmarillion" spine lettering faded to white. Not orange. Not yellow. White. Can't say I've ever seen this, but what do I know?! There's a prize in it for the winner...

I think there is something going on with the links. Khamûl's link did the same thing mine did in another post.

Exaggeration is dogfark's trademark, I think. And if you have a Billings 1st, it is total crap (and a reprint) that isn't worth having (as real collectors are only interested in the Clowes, as that is the true first). That's the general idea I get from his FB page, anyway. Still, if the can get 150 quid for a 5 quid book, that is quite a skill.

This has to be about the worst copy I have ever seen of this book...

Yeah, should say limited to 999 copies excluding this example.

This has to be one of the most ludicrous listings I've seen in a while:
eBay Item #161802347766

We find other first edition examples of this book for sale at over $1,350!
Now that is quite a find!

Not sure why it bothers me so much, but this seems borderline deceptive. He's got scrolling text stating "LIMITED TO about 600 PRINTINGS!!", photos and descriptions of the limited signed edition, then hidden within the wall of information and useless text you can see that the item actually for sale is not the limited edition.

Then he has the "gall" to add: "...it really galls me to find people selling items for rediculous prices claiming they are "rare" or "highly collectible"; and what's worse is, naive people are paying it~!"

I mean, all the info is there for a potential buyer to know what he's getting, but this just seems like a blatant attempt to deceive.

Whatever, it's been a long week. Thanks for providing an outlet for my old man rants.

This fellow is well known to the group as being an unscrupulous seller. He often misrepresents the items he is selling. I had the misfortune of responding to one of his "buy it now" adds, only to have him refuse to honour the sale. I left the following feedback on his account.

"sold book then refused to honor transaction - infantile response, odd little man"

I would caution anyone to avoid this seller.
