This kind of behaviour exemplifies what I dislike about some (but not all) of the book dealers that frequent the Tolkien arena.
Re-using photos and listings because the books "usually vary only slightly in condition" is completely unacceptable, IMHO -- unless the listing clearly states that the pictures are stock photos.
The fact is that unless fine, no two books are the same, and the seller claims he doesn't do this with his "fine, rare" books.
The buyer needs to be able to determine for themselves whether the book meets their requirements, and if they can't trust that the picture in the advert is actually of the book they are buying, it is hard to see how they can do this.
Of course, one could cynically just read it as "You might have noticed our stock isn't turning over, here is a not very well thought out reason for that"....
