As much as I like the Professor, he was not a Saint.
Do the Tolkien Estate know about this?

I do not have more information. But from what I learned the leader of this movement the Italian Daniel sent a letter to Tolkien Estate asking about it and informing about a possible cause.
And in September, last month, there was a mass at Oxford oratory and there was a Tolkien's request for canonization. And from what I was told, Joanna Tolkien was present.

Dated more than two years ago I notice.
From the tone of the letter, it sounds like the Archbishop humouring someone.

Fortunately, I'm not at all religious, and I totally understand the system of cononisation is nonsense, but this is all very silly. Nothing will come of it.

Reading the letter, there is no official canonization process going on:
Until the Church decides to open a cause in respect of J.R.R. Tolkien I would feel hesitant about personally approving a prayer in support of his canonization, especially for an international group. At the same time, I am pleased to encourage you in seeking to inform people more widely about J.R.R. Tolkien’s Catholic faith and the influence that this had on his writing and on his life.

It's obviously not something to be taken seriously?! As far as history tells us, Tolkien was as devout a Catholic as any other of his generation. That's hardly a reason to beatify someone, let alone canonise them :-/

To be perfectly honest, I find the idea abhorrent on so many levels, not least my firm conviction that Tolkien would himself have been completely horrified at the idea, but certainly also for the damage such a thing would do to Tolkien's reputation and the reading of his books.

Yeah, I don't think that will happen. I also think that Tolkien would find that idea rather absurd.
