Am interested in how many copies were produced, my understanding is that it was 1500 copies, but is that correct?
I have seen an item on ebay that states that only 1488 copies were bound, can anyone confirm this?

The round numbers quoted for print run sizes tend to be nominal. In reality slightly more sets of sheets are produced and the number of copies actually bound comes in slightly above or below the nominal number.
1488 copies in trade binding plus 21 in paper wrappers for the 1st/1st Hobbit. The records mention another 11 sets of folded sheets, but it is not clear what these were for, or if they were also bound. If they were, that would make 1499 "proper" 1st/1st copies.

Most importantly, how many copies remain? Does anyone have an estimate? :)
