Function over form for me. I tend to be more interested with what's in the book than what the book looks like. And more about what's on the shelf than what the shelf looks like. And I spend accordingly; all of my shelves have been either given to me, found, or purchased very cheaply. But collecting tastes change over time, I'm sure I'll be happy to upgrade the shelves someday. I certainly do agree with you.
