I just discovered that Leeds University have digitalized their issues of the Gryphon magazine. It's of particular interest for the December 1922 issue, which contains

'N.N.' may stand for 'No Name', or perhaps Latin 'Nomen Nescio' or 'Nullo Nomine'.
No reasoning is given in S&H for
why, though I seem to recall seeing some speculation about it written up somewhere I cannot find.

About the No Name, the hypothesis comes from Shippey in first place, at the end of his commentary in Arda 1984, where the poem was reprinted, but he didn't give a reason why he suggests that.

Thanks as well for posting this, it is very nice to see items like this, but I am now more intrigued as to why it is not signed J.R.R.T.
