That is amusing indeed! I really don't have any sympathy for guys who just wish to profit from Tolkien.

The market clearly showed it was only worth £1600. I hope, like Dogfark, he is stuck holding his now-overpriced book for a long time. That said, at least this copy hasn't been tampered with to make it look better than it is...

The Dust-jacket is also printed to war economy standard and is much thinner very very few copies survived!

I can't tell any difference in dust-jacket thickness between the 1942/1946 Hobbits and the other 1st/2nd/3rd edition dust-jackets.

Not an eBay auction, but someone may be interested.

Sorry to ask, but does the 1942 The Children's Book Club Hobbit is worth the same that the basic 1942 A&U edition ?

With a dust jacket, I would think it might be worth more -- they are very uncommon.

I'd agree, only a small number of GA&U copies exist with dust-jackets, but it looks like a lot less Foyle's original dust-jackets exist. In both cases, the condition for either existing dust-jackets is not good.

Not really, these are UK first edition's which are not easy to get hold of, however if you have a look at Deagol's excellent site for print numbers, http://tolkienbooks.net/php/earlyhobbits.php#1st

3000 Foyles Book Club Edition with very rare dust-jackets.
1509 GA&U with rare dust-jackets.

They are both UK 1st edition Hobbits printed in small numbers, but it does appear that even though more of the Book Club Edition were published than Allen & Unwin, less dust-jackets survive.

My Book Club copy has a facsimile dust-jacket, but it also has a value as a UK first edition Hobbit
