I want to take you on one of the greatest fantasy adventures ever written. Join me for a 12-hour armchair marathon reading of “The Hobbit”, in aid of two amazing charities which are doing extraordinary work right now to help those most in need - Andy Serkis

I cannot speak for Mr. Serkis or what process he followed, but I can say that my work to get permission from the Estate and the publisher for the Tolkien Reading Day event didn't fully conclude until the day before my event...

Thank you for pointing that out.
I never considered that, I expected that these things get sorted well in advance or at least when it is something like the amazing TRD (at such short notice) or a charitable event by an established and well known person such as Andy Serkis would be a quick matter.
If you have this I’m very grateful to the Tolkien Estate and to HarperCollins for giving special permission for this one-off reading. from the gofundme page then you are ok not good to do this without permission.
Talked to HC and they did not talk to the Estate about a paid for charity download of this reading? Looks like they will and hopefully will say yes and a charity download will be available

I am fairly certain that sentence wasn't on the gofundme page when I looked originally. Glad it has been clarified (and permission was granted)!
EDIT: checked the Internet Archive snapshot from yesterday (May 7th) and there was no sentence thanking for permission. ?

Andy Serkis has announced on Twitter, Thank you all so much for your support of last week's Hobbitathon. In an effort to continue our fundraising for our frontline workers, we are releasing Chapter 5, "Riddles in the Dark," online for a limited period. A big thank you to @HarperCollins and the Tolkien Estate!
It is available until 14th June to watch on Youtube.
