of what was mentioned:
- there's a section on Holdstock (2 pages, 2 images, and text)
....and that's it. No Lovecraft from what I saw, judging by the table of contents, and checking out the non Middle-earth chapters.
Thanks for checking that.
No problem! I enjoy using my Tolkien books (this one isn't but you get the idea...) to look stuff up, about as much as I do reading through them.
With many apologies to John, I had inadvertently included some additional detail from our conversation in the interview, that he had not intended to be published. This has been corrected.
During the Waterstones interview yesterday, Alan Lee mentioned that he had done some preliminary work for a scene involving the Blue Wizards for the movies, though nothing was ever filmed. I asked for a bit more detail, and he gave me this response to share with you all:
- I had a quick look through my files and found some of the istari sketches- they are really just designs for the hand-props for the blue wizards - the staffs in particular. There's nothing that would expand anyone's knowledge of Middle-earth. It was during pick ups on one of the films; an insertion of a shot or two of the wizards arriving, probably with no dialogue, as a quick flash-back. But we did get some props made and costumes roughed out and fitted before the idea was cancelled. The whole episode was over inside a week. We had more than a few of these interesting diversions to liven up six years of work!
What an absolutely interesting tidbit nonetheless. No matter what... I’d still like to see what Alan came up with. ?
For those interested, the interviews with the artists have been translated into French by Marie Bretagnolle and published at
