Tolkien Shop (in the Netherlands) should never have sold this copy, IMHO. I've never bought from them (always looks expensive), but I can't see any sensible reason why any dealer would sell a copy like this, rather than just tossing it. Reputations are ruined by selling garbage like this.
Ugh. Send it back! His terms of service allow for returns for full refund, I assume he will stand by that.

I did ask the buyer if he had requested a refund/return, but he didn't answer that question.

This copy is essential worthless. Was some working on their car and reading LOTR at the same time?
The buyer seems to have deleted all his comments, so perhaps more to the story than appears (though, irrespective, no dealer should have been selling that grotty thing).
That said, this was the posting about price paid (attached)

I agree, but, the post was on reddit, so I think linking to it is completely fair, whilst maintaining an open mind as to what actually went wrong here.
That copy being sold by anyone would raise eyebrows, be it an eBay random or someone more well known.

How is it any different to any of us criticising Amazon or Abe?
The book was not as described and there would no issue with discussion if it were a seller on eBay or any of the other big sites. I see no difference.
It's not any different. But Stu stated the caveat:
So I thought it worth emphasizing that we don't appear to know all the facts here.

Ahha I see. Saying "I think I'd caution criticism of René over some trash talking on Reddit." is not really exphasizing that though, just trashing Reddit, now I understand your point, and agree.
Thank you for explaining.

FWIW, he told me via PM that he deleted the thread because of speculation that he had been refused a refund (which is not the case). He said he hadn't heard back yet in that regard.
