I just noticed a weird repetition in the text of Tolkien's letter at the beginning of the book and I was wondering if this was in anyone else's.
On pages xxiv-xxv the main body of the text, instead of saying "He rules a growing empire from the great dark tower of Barad-dûr in Mordor, near to the Mountain of Fire, wielding the One Ring", it repeats the page's footnote (regarding what Elrond symbolises) in between "He rules" and "a growing empire..."https://www.reddit.com/r/tolkienbooks/ ... illustrated_silmarillion/

I have let HarperCollins know about this error. You can see the problem in the two areas with red boxes in the image.

I figured you would let Chris/David know!

Yes I have exactly the same error in both the TPB and de luxe editions. I had hoped they would at least issue an erratum slip with the de luxe. Very clumsy.

To be fair, they have only been informed that this error exists today, so very difficult to issue an erratum slip until you know about the error.

They were released at the same time -- I imagine an errata slip would not have been an option. it is a pretty giant error, mind.

I thought the de luxe was issued after the TPB? Looking on the bright side, perhaps it will become a collectible error ?

HarperCollins have replied and thanked everyone for pointing out the error.
Unfortunately we have almost sold out of the first print runs of both editions, so can’t very well do much about those now, but we should be able to catch the reprint.

So the print run of 4000 copies is almost sold out in less than one month for Sil. Looking at the new publication of LotR, it seems possible that this will be just like that, although the print run for the 1st printing will be higher, because of an increased prominence.

Seems odd, given the UT is still available six months later.
